TIPS FOR TRAVEL TO MEXICO

DRIVING:

Driving regulations in Mexico are pretty much the same as they are in Canada or the U.S. so they are probably close to the regulations from where you reside.

PARKING:
Enforced. Do NOT park illegally in Progreso, Merida, Chetumal, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Izmal.

NOTE: Sometimes an officer will remove the license plates from an illegally parked vehicle. This means getting them back from the police. This costs money and is time consuming. If you drive the vehicle without plates and get busted you will compound the problem and pay a higher fine.

SIGNS:
An oversized E inside a circle, usually red, indicates "Parking"; with a line drawn through it means "No Parking"

GAS:
Sold in liters and always pumped by an Attendent. It is customary to tip the Attendent but make sure you see with your own eyes the pump starts at $0.00 and check your change. Expect to pay cash and fill up by 10 pm

TAXIS:
Always negotiate the fare before you get in, your hotel can give you an average fare for comparison. The more people the better the fare so know before you go if the fare is per person or per trip.

CURRENCY:
The Peso is the national currency, but Canadian is accepted all over. You do not need American funds. If you use American currency be aware the dollar is widely exchanged at 10 Peso's to the dollar. This will cost you an average of 11% shy of the true value. Use Peso's if you can. Barter, Barter, Barter when possible!

ATM's are widely available and credit cards are accepted, but be aware, in Baja credit cards cost more to use. When dining,be sure to check with the restaurant before ordering if you plan on paying by credit card.
